The most common way to clean hard water stains that form in a toilet is to apply store bought cleaners. A typical store bought toilet cleaner contains harsh chemicals that react with the minerals in the water. No matter what the sales person says, you should not use these harsh chemicals if you are on a septic system. Even if you are not on a septic system, you may prefer not to use chemicals. In that case, a few alternatives are available to remove hard water stains from a toilet.
One alternative to chemical toilet cleaner used to remove hard water stains is a homemade powder. This will require mixing a variety of ingredients based on the recipe. Mixing a recipe can take time and you may also not have the proper ingredients on hand, so be prepared for possible trip to the store.
The only downside to using less harsh chemicals is light scrubbing will be needed. This should not be much of an effort and the product is easy to rinse away.
