The Smithsonian released an interesting article that shows how potatoes can be used as a salt-bridge between two metals, allowing an electron current to move across wire to create electricity. Using boiled potatoes (instead of raw), one research group was able to prove that they could create a system that could light rooms using LED-powered with sufficient lighting for up to 40 days.
