The PLU code (price lookup number) on the sticker is filled with more than price information. It tells you how produce is grown. By reading the PLU code, you can determine if that produce is “conventionally” or “traditionally” grown; that is, with chemical fertilizers, fungicides, or herbicides. Also, you tell if that produce has been genetically engineered (GE or GMO). Click the link below for instructions on how to read the PLU code. It’s super easy!
If you’re taking the time to read the codes and/or purchase organic food, then you’ll probably be interested in our article on how to nationally clean or sanitize your fruits and vegetables without chemicals.
